While Twitter is primarily known for its silly hashtags and mundane updates (ie. “Just went to the bathroom!”), the leader of the Catholic world is apparently now looking to hop the Twitter train. While there are currently a number of eager hopefuls posing to be the big “P,” Pope Benedict, Benny himself ,is putting a rest to the rumors by announcing that there will soon be an officially-verified, Vatican-approved Twitter account.

The 85 year-old – who is justifiably not the biggest fan of computers or technology – will not be writing the tweets himself (although he does still write most of his speeches by hand). So what can you expect to see on Pope Benedict’s Twitter feed? The content you can expect to see will be comprised of his weekly general audience, including Sunday blessings, homilies on major Church holidays and responses to major world events, such as natural disasters, Reuters reported last week.

The papal handle, which has not yet been officially confirmed, is looking to be @BenedictusPPXVI, or his name and title in Latin. Currently, the leading fake account is @Pope_Benedict, boasting an impressive 16,834 followers whose twitter feed mainly consists of inspirational quotes and relevant news.

Although Pope Benedict has given a “qualified blessing” to social networking and said in a document last year that the advent of social media offers ‘a great opportunity ,’ he still warns of its potential detrimental effects, such as depersonalization, alienation and self-indulgence.

So now, the Pope’s estimated 1.2 billion followers will take on a fresh, new modernized role.
