The poverty rate in Connecticut continues to rise, according to new census data from the American Community Survey.

According to the data, last year, 10.9 percent of state residents had incomes under the Federal Poverty Level, an increase from 10.1 percent in  2010. 

Connecticut Voices for Children, a research-based think tank which analyzed the data, said poverty rates increased the quickest among children and that the data is a reflection on the impact the eonomic recession has had on state residents.

Among the data, the survey found that  last year 14.9 percent of Connecticut children under 18 years of age, an estimated 118,809 children, lived in families earning less than $22,811 a year. In 2010, Connecticut's poverty rate was 12.8 percent.

Connecticut Voices is asking state lawmakers to raise the minimum wage, encourage participation in the state and federal Earned Income Tax Credit , and avoid state budget cuts that could undermine support for low-income families, the non-profit stated in a press release.
