Brief: Roxbury church to host fund-raiser for Simply Smiles charity

The Roxbury Congregational Church is hosting “Art For A Cause” at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Southbury on Saturday, (Oct. 27) to benefit Simply Smiles, a Westport-based charity that seeks to help impoverished children.

Simply Smiles works in the jungles of southern Mexico and on the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota with housing needs, education and food distribution.

Rev. David F. Peters with the Roxbury Congregational Church said each year numerous groups from Connecticut travel to these locations and spend a week working on homes, schools and providing activities for the children of the village in which they work. This past summer, groups from the following towns worked with Simply Smiles: Roxbury, Monroe, Redding, Salisbury, Winsted, Choate School in Wallingford, and Bethel among others.

The dinner and auction, which begins at 6 p.m. will feature original art work, handmade rugs from Oaxaca, Mexico, sports memorabilia and other items. There will be a silent auction as well as a live auction. Tickets are $50 per person and can be obtained from Charlie Meade at 203-775-1434 or the church office at 860-355-1978.

Visit Simply Similes for more information on the work of charity.
